A petition challenging the release of the youngest of six men found guilty of raping and torturing a medical student on a moving bus in Delhi in 2012 will be heard by the Supreme Court today. The convict, now 20, was released on Sunday evening from a correctional home to a non-profit organization.
The convict was just a few months short of 18 when he and five others assaulted Jyoti Singh and brutalized her on the night of December 16, 2012, in a crime that horrified the nation and led to protests in India and abroad.
He was sentenced to three years in a correctional home, the maximum punishment under India’s law for criminals below 18. A bill to change the law and treat convicts who are 16 and above like adults in crimes like rape and murder has been passed by the Lok Sabha but is pending in the Rajya Sabha.
