Former Egyptian president Morsi sentenced to 20 years in prison

An Egyptian court sentenced former president Mohammed Morsi to 20 years in prison on 21st April, handing down the first verdict against him since the military ousted him in July 2013.The court found Mr. Morsi and 14 other members of the Muslim Brotherhood guilty of inciting violence against protesters who had staged a sit-in outside the presidential palace in 2012, when Mr. Morsi was still in power. Mass protests against Mr. Morsi in June 2013 enabled Egypt’s military — suspected by Mr. Morsi and the Brotherhood to be aligned with Mr. Mubarak — to intervene and topple the Islamist leader. Mr. Morsi was arrested July 3, 2013, and held incommunicado until his appearance at a court hearing four months later.
