India now has the world’s second-largest road network after an increase of 59% in the last nine years. India’s road network now stands at 1,45,240 km as compared to 91,287 km in 2013-14. This road network transports 64.5% of all goods in the country and 90% of India’s total passenger traffic uses road network to commute. Road transportation has gradually increased over the years with improvement in connectivity between cities, towns and villages in the country. In India, sale of automobiles and movement of freight by roads is growing at a rapid rate. The government also aims to construct 23 new national highways by 2025. The US currently has the world’s largest road network.
