A team of scientists at the University of Washington has genetically modified a common houseplant to remove cancer-causing pollutant compounds chloroform and benzene from the air around it. The plant releases protein 2E1 to transform the compounds into molecules which it uses to support its growth. The scientists are working to increase the plant’s capabilities to remove other harmful pollutants.
