A team of international researchers claims to have conducted the first-ever global survey of the ecological diversity of viruses in the oceans, identifying nearly two lakh marine viral species. This finding has increased the number of known species by over ten times. The samples were collected between 2009 and 2013 during expeditions aboard a single sailboat named ‘Tara’.
