French President Emmanuel Macron has named centre-right Edouard Philippe as his first Prime Minister, making his first major political decision a day after being inaugurated as the country’s leader. The move is being seen as Macron’s way of showing that he is a real centrist who can unite elements of the left and right to overcome old party divides.
Philippe has been a member of the Union for a Popular Movement and later the Republicans. He has also served as a member of the National Assembly.Macron, a former minister and investment banker, was elected as the country’s youngest-ever leader since Napoleon on May 7.
