Iran to name first woman ambassador since 1979

Iran is to appoint a woman ambassador for the first time since its 1979 Islamic Revolution. President Hassan Rouhani, who named two women as vice presidents, said Afkham’s appointment was part of a “campaign to empower and elevate women in Iran.” While women may hold key posts, including in parliament and the cabinet, they can not serve as judges and have not been allowed to run for president.
