CUBA’S FIRST PRIME MINISTER SINCE 1976

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has appointed Manuel Marrero Cruz as the country’s first Prime Minister in more than 40 years. The post of Prime Minister, which was scrapped in 1976 by the then-revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, was reinstated under the rules of a new constitution passed earlier this year. Cruz is also serving as the Tourism Minister.Cruz is the first person to hold the position of Prime Minister of Cuba in 43 years.A member of the Communist Party of Cuba, Marrero served as the country’s long-time Minister of Tourism from 2004 until his appointment to the office of the Prime Minister in 2019. During his tenure as tourism minister, Cuban tourism witnessed massive resilience. He previously been an architect and held the rank of colonel in the Cuban military.The last Prime Minister before the abolishment in 1976 was Fidel Castro
